More than 35 million UK taxpayers will need to prepare for a brand-new service designed to simplify how they manage financial information.
The new Pay as You Earn (PAYE) service aims to give UK taxpayers an easy, online platform to manage their tax information, including income, allowances, reliefs and expenses.
This change was announced by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), who has begun implementing their ambitious Transformation Roadmap, and this is the first major step of this stride towards becoming a digital first organisation.
Commenting on the new service and the transformation roadmap, HMRC’s Chief Executive and First Permanent Secretary JP Marks said:
“The Government’s ambition is for a simpler tax and customs system, and this roadmap sets out how HMRC will deliver a first-class experience that feels different to their customers.
“By 2030, UK citizens will experience a tax administration system that is more automated, more focused on self-service, and better set up to get things right first time so they can fulfil their tax obligations.”
This transformation to a more modernised, digital organisation expects to save HMRC around £50 million annually.
Its plans cover a wide range of innovations, including the modernisation of the tax and customs systems, the introduction of artificial intelligence, and enhanced collaboration with intermediaries and third-party providers.
In addition to improving internal systems, HMRC want this roadmap to be a catalyst for improved communication between taxpayers, businesses and intermediaries, so they feel confident in speaking with them.
This development is part of HMRC’s wider goal to become a digital-first organisation by 2030. Their roadmap includes over 50 digital initiatives, tools and changes designed to ensure that 90 per cent of customer interactions happen online.
HMRC believe that by offering a more accessible, user-friendly system, individuals will have greater confidence and clarity when managing their financial affairs.
The digital PAYE platform is intended to streamline the process, making it easier for taxpayers to view and update financial details such as earnings and tax reliefs.
As HMRC continue to push forward with its digital focus, more services are expected to move online. Taxpayers should be prepared for this shift and ensure they stay informed.
If any confusion arises, or if managing taxes online feels overwhelming, reaching out to a financial professional can provide valuable support.
It’s essential that taxpayers are aware of the upcoming changes, particularly as HMRC continues to digitise its systems and processes.
