Claiming your Self-Assessment tax refund without the helpline

In response to a spike in suspicious activity, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has paused its phone and webchat services for Self-Assessment repayment requests.

It is a protective measure, but one that has left many people wondering how they will get their money back.

The good news is that you can still make a claim. The options still available are:

Online – If you have a Government Gateway account, log in and request your repayment there. It is fast, secure, and still running as usual.

Post – Prefer the old-fashioned way? You can send your request by mail. Just be aware: it takes longer, and you will need to double-check everything you include.

Why has HMRC done this?

Not too much information has been released from HMRC. An understandable move, as they do not want to hand useful information to would-be fraudsters.

For honest taxpayers, it just means an extra step or two and a little more diligence.

What is the risk if you get it wrong?

Without being able to ring up and ask a quick question, one small error could delay your refund by weeks or longer.

That is why having someone in your corner can make all the difference.
